Guitar Tots

FAQ'S

What age does my child have to be?
The Guitar Tots method is specially developed to teach kids the basics of playing guitar from age 3 through to age 9, however the same fundamentals apply to anyone learning guitar, no matter what age.

My child is left handed. Is Guitar Tots still suitable for them?
Yes! There is no difference in learning guitar right or left handed. Exactly the same fingers are used to play guitar, they're just on opposing hands. The technique is exactly the same either hand, in the same way a left footed football player still kicks a football identically to a right footed player.

Guitar Tots has been used successfully to teach both right and left handed children.

Do I need to be able to play guitar to use this course with my child?
Definitely not. The video lessons cover the process that your child learns by, however depending on the age of your child then there may need to be adult supervision to give a little structure and help initially, but it is very easy to use and anyone can understand it.

It goes without saying though that if you are fortunate enough to be able to play guitar yourself then you can enjoy playing the lessons with your child.

Could an adult learn to play guitar using the Guitar Tots course?
Absolutely! Whilst it's not necessary for you to be able to play guitar for your child to use Guitar Tots, if you follow the course throughout then you will also gain the skills and knowledge required to play guitar to a good standard. Most popular songs use exactly the same chords that are used in the Guitar Tots lessons.

How long will it take my child to learn a song?
The lessons are set out so that they become progressively more challenging, so the very basic songs could be learned in a single session, but as the saying goes 'practice makes perfect' so as long as your child spends a minimum of 1 hour per week playing then they will make quick progress.

How does Guitar Tots help my child long term?
The great thing about playing guitar is that once you have learned even just a handful of chords then there are an amazing number of songs you can play. Just to give you an example...take the chords from Old MacDonald (G, C, D). The same 3 chords are used in the following songs: Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morisson, Suspicious Minds - Elvis, When You Say Nothing - Ronan Keating, Time Of Your Life - Green Day, Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd, Little Things - One Direction...and the list could go on!

The Guitar Tots course covers all the main chords and so sets your child up for further learning as they age and progress.

Why is Guitar Tots better than just getting my child a private teacher?
The main reason is affordability. The cost of Guitar Tots is about the same price you would pay for ONE lesson if you were to hire a private teacher, and many teachers will not even attempt to teach kids younger than 8 years old.

Guitar Tots also comes complete with song sheets, colouring sheets and interactive games and stories which any standard guitar teacher would not provide, plus the online video lessons means that you have a teacher to hand anytime of the day.

Can I use Guitar Tots for Ukulele?
I regularly get asked if Guitar Tots is suitable for Ukulele so here are a few useful pointers...

1. Although a Ukulele may look for all intents and purposes like a small guitar it is in fact a completely different instrument, as different as a violin from a guitar, so do not be fooled into thinking a Ukulele is a suitable alternative for a small child. It is as challenging to learn how to play a Ukulele as it is to play guitar, so it's not an easier option it's a different option.

2. If you are thinking of purchasing a guitar then we recommend a half-sized guitar for ages 3 - 6 years and then maybe a 3/4 sized guitar for ages 7 upwards. Both are scaled down versions of a full size so for instance the width of the neck and fretboard will be suitable for smaller hands and fingers.

Do I need access to a printer to print off the lesson material?
No way. Everything your child needs is sent to you. Should you wish to make extra copies of characters that your children like then please feel free to do so or they are available in the members area. The only time you would need to print anything is if you decide to check out the free lesson. Click here >>
